It’s the unofficial official Star Wars Day, May the Fourth, and there was no way I was going to let you all get away with not hearing from me today!
NOTE: I wrote this for work, so I’m leaving some of this stuff in there, um kay?! But you do know me, I like Star Wars, I even did this same exercise six years ago when I wrote about Eleven Star Wars Phrases to Describe 11 Years of Marriage. I have to work on those titles!)
Not too long ago, in a Service Center far, far away (depending on where you’re located), this wannabe Jedi sent out an email with 10 Star Wars quotes that related to work. I’ve decided to update the list, and recycle the idea, a la J.J. Abrams and The Force Awakens.
As most of us continue to sit in quarantine, and start to feel more and more like we’re living in the bottom of a Sarlacc Pit, or wishing our little Ewoks, who have become our partners during the Battle of COVID, would climb back up the tree, my new hope is that that these quotes will give you inspiration in your work day.
So holster your blaster, grab a glass of blue milk, and feel the force of the Top-10 Work-Related Star Wars Quotes!
1. “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda, Star Wars: Episode V – Empire Strikes Back
Is there any better Star Wars line than the one spoken by the wise Yoda?! When Luke was whining about trying to get his X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp Yoda stopped him. “Try not … ” Often we get discouraged, don’t feel like we can go that extra step, we pause and then say, “Well, I’ll try” knowing we’re not going to put forth any extra effort. Yoda tells us to, “No! Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Forget trying, do it! Face the adversity. If you succeed great. If you fail, then, as the wise Yoda also stated, “The greatest teacher, failure is.”
2. “Pass on what you have learned.” – Yoda, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
Promise this won’t be a Yoda-centric post, but plain and simple, hogging all the knowledge for yourself won’t make anyone else around you better. It might allow you to shine for a moment, but when we shine together, that’s when the real rewards occur.
3. “Stay on target.” – Gold Five, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
It didn’t end well for the nameless Rebel pilot only known by his call sign, Gold Five, but he delivered an iconic line that can be used daily in our life. Create your goals, make a plan of attack, and then stay on target. Want to hit your metrics for May? “Stay on target.” Want to get that promotion? “Stay on target.” Want to destroy the Death Star with one shot? “Stay on target.”
4. “You can’t stop change any more than you can stop the suns from setting.” – Shmi Skywalker, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
The mother of Darth Vader makes the list with a line we all can relate to. You can’t stop change. Every year we introduce one, or two, or thirteen different processes or programs. It doesn’t matter. Can you stop the sun from setting? Nope! And you can’t stop change. It’s coming, it will always come, it just matters how you handle it. (HINT: Those three quotes above will help you with that.)
5. “Your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon Jinn, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
An underrated quote, but one that is also relatable in every day life. If we focus on accomplishing our goals, if we focus on improving our production, hitting our metrics, being a better agent to our clients, that focus will become a reality. Focus on things that are beyond our control, or not important, and our reality will become just that.
6. “Never tell me the odds.” – Han Solo, Star Wars: Episode V – Empire Strikes Back
We’ve all had or heard stories where someone’s been counted out, only to overcome incredible odds. Heck, this blog started for that exact reason. First time here? Click here to understand what I’m talking about. Don’t count yourself out. “I’ll never get that promotion. I have no chance.” Han had a 3,720-to-1 chance at successfully navigating that asteroid field. Guess what, he beat those odds. Be Han.
7. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
As a Senior Customer Service Representative that works our Senior Chat, I must be honest and say I’ve said this line out loud a few times – to myself – when assisting my peers. Have faith in yourself and the work you do. Put away your targeting computer, take that leap of faith, and trust in the research you’ve done, the knowledge you’ve accumulated, and the hard work you’ve put in. Often 3,720 times to one you’re correct. If you’re not, well there’s that whole, “The greatest teacher, failure is” line from above.
8. “In my experience there is no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
Plain and simple, luck didn’t get you your job, your metrics, your recognition. Putting in the work did.
9. “Who’s the more foolish: the fool, or the fool who follows him?” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
One of my favorite lines of the saga. An, “aww snap!” moment. Don’t follow the fool. If you think someone’s doing something they shouldn’t be doing, turn and walk in the other direction, cause if you follow the fool, then you’re more foolish than the fool. And as Mr. T would say, “I pity the fool!” (Not Star Wars but it was too easy!)
10. “Sometimes we must let go of our pride and do what is requested of us.” – Anakin Skywalker, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
Sometimes we have to do what we don’t want to do to get where we want to go. Maybe we’re asked to do something we feel is below our pay grade. Oh well, it’s requested of us. Let go of your pride, do the task and do it well.
